Omega is famous for supplying Seamaster 300 Big Triangle divers, RAF53 pilot's watches, and other military issued models to the British Ministry of Defence, and in recent years has supplied many small volume limited editions to individual units. The first non-civilian wristwatches ever used by British forces, they are some of the most sought after military timepieces today.
Sadly, I don’t own an SBS Rolex Submariner or a Royal Navy Omega Seamaster, and many of the watches in my collection are neither particularly rare or valuable. None the less, they do tell an interesting story on the evolution of watches in general, and military issued watches in particular. We decided to pop by the Omega Museum, to take a look at three very special issued Omega references. The first example we are taking a look at is the Omega reference 6W/16 mono-pusher chronograph, which was produced in the 1960s for the Royal Canadian Airforce. The most well-known military diving wristwatches are the Omega Seamaster 300, and the Rolex Military Submariner, also known as the MilSub, which adopted some of the characteristics of the Seamaster 300 and eventually replaced it as the Royal Navy’s chosen diver. A decade later, the brand supplied the British military with a version of these watches. (It’s notable that the brand today makes a vintage-inspired version of the Seamaster 300, which despite its confusingly similar name is quite different from the Seamster Diver 300M — more on each below.)
Most people know about the British military Seamaster 300, which preceded the MilSub. It’s sometimes referred to as the Royal Navy Omega, but in fact what isn’t so well known is that the first batch was actually issued not to the RN, but to the British Army.In 1940, OMEGA was commissioned as the single largest supplier of watches for the British armed forces and its allies.
