Launched in 1971, the Explorer II is the worthy heir to the Explorer and shares its same qualities of resistance to extreme conditions. Perfectly waterproof and able to withstand icy polar conditions, it is distinguishable from its predecessor by its unique face.
Reliable and legible under all circumstances, the Explorer is one of Rolex’s first tool watches. Thanks to its 24-hour display, the Explorer II accompanies those who venture into the unknown, where the boundary between day and night is blurred.
The Explorer II features a date display, an additional orange 24-hour hand and a fixed bezel with 24-hour graduations, enabling day to be distinguished from night. It became the watch of choice for speleologists, volcanologists and polar explorers.
When it was released at Baselworld way back in 2011, the Explorer II Ref.216570 was the first watch from Rolex to utilise their then new Calibre 3187. It was an exciting and innovative movement, and to this day, it still offers a hell of a lot in terms of technicality, benefiting from a Parachrom hairspring, Paraflex shock absorbers, Breguet . Like the GMT-Master at the time, the Explorer II was also powered by Rolex’s in-house, 26-jewel 1575 caliber, which is based on the 1570 movement and features an additional GMT hand as well as stop-seconds and a 48-hour power reserve when fully wound.The Rolex Explorer II.
